Hail, hurricanes and hard freezes all test a commercial roof. A little preparation before the weather hits can prevent a lot of damage after.

Severe weather is hard on commercial roofs. Spring and summer bring hail across much of the country, hurricane season runs from June through November along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts, and winter freezes can crack flashings and back up drains. For facility managers, the goal is simple: find the weak spots before the weather does.
Clear drains, scuppers and gutters so water can leave the roof quickly
Inspect seams, flashings and penetrations for open laps or cracks
Secure rooftop equipment, panels and anything that could become debris
Check perimeter edge metal and coping — wind damage often starts at the edges
Photograph the roof in its current condition for your records
That last step matters more than most owners realize. Dated photos of your roof before a storm make it much easier to document new damage afterward.
No roof inspection is worth an injury. Keep staff and contractors off the roof during high winds, lightning and ice. Safety is MVI's number one core value, and it applies to your team as much as ours.
Schedule a professional inspection as soon as conditions are safe
Look for hail bruising, punctures, displaced membrane and damaged flashings
Check interior ceilings and walls for new leaks or staining
Make temporary repairs quickly to limit water intrusion
Keep photos, reports and invoices together for your insurance claim
Small storm damage that goes unnoticed can let water into insulation for months. A post-storm inspection is one of the highest-value visits you can schedule.
The easiest way to stay ahead of storm season is a preventive maintenance program with scheduled inspections and documented findings. MVI builds maintenance programs around your facility, provides storm damage assessments after hail, freezes and hurricanes, and offers 24/7 support for urgent roof issues.
